Ava, a 10 year old girl, has behavioral and emotional issues at home and school. She’s angry much of the time, is having large outbursts, has difficulty sleeping, and constantly needs reassurance from adults in her life.
When Ava was 9, she witnessed her Mom’s boyfriend physically harm her Mom over the course of several months at home. By the time Ava’s Mom and her boyfriend had separated, Ava was struggling with anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and was often irritable or angry.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment model for children and adolescents, as well as their parents or caregivers. In TF-CBT, Ava has started the process of healing from the trauma that she witnessed. Ava is working with her therapist to create a narrative of her story, identify her triggers, and learn stress management tools to better cope.
Ava has learned to more appropriately express herself when she is upset or irritable. She has also noticed that she is not as fearful of going to sleep and can complete tasks more independently. Ava will continue to work towards her behavioral and emotional goals with the treatment plan and session schedule created to fit her needs.
